At The Dementia Support group we have a saying,

"When the present is frustrating,
the future frightening,
the past may be consoling"

This reminds us that when we are feeling particularly afraid or upset we often long for the time when the world seemed a safe place, when we had no cares and were loved and cared for. People living with dementia often seek this solace in their past and reminiscence can form a very important part of their present search for well being and understanding.

Reminiscence Therapy has been defined as,

' vocal or silent recall of events in a person's life, either alone, or with another person or group of people.'

It typically involves group meetings, at least once a week, in which participants are encouraged to talk about past events, often assisted by aids such as photos, music, objects and videos of the past.

There is, often, little consistent application of psychological therapies in dementia services. A number of these 'therapies' were greeted with enthusiasm by health care practitioners in under stimulating care environments. They were expected to work miracles and their 'failure' to do this has led to their widespread disuse.

The Dementia Support Group has positive proof of the beneficial effect of reminiscence therapy and sought funding to compile a range of reminiscent projects to provide a holistic recall of past events.

We are grateful to the Sir James and Lady Scott Trust for helping to fund our range of reminiscence chests.

We have compiled a further five 'living history chests' to provide a wide appeal as possible.

The chests provide a holistic experience providing tastes, sights, smells and things to do. The chests can be borrowed by anyone interested and will be of particular interest to day centres and residential homes.
