From TEARFUND - UPDATE

Pakistan floods update

Surrounded by flood waters, the cows and their owner have nowhere to go and no one to help them. With every rising centimetre of water, the muddy island they are stranded on shrinks that little bit more and their desperate plight grows.

Take a bird's eye view of the flooding in Pakistan and scenes of people trapped like this are all too common.
Vast tracts of land are submerged from north to south and 20 million people are feeling the damaging impact of the country's worst floods in 80 years.

While aid is getting through, damage to roads and bridges is making the task more difficult. Such is the widespread extent of infrastructure damage that there are warnings that national economic growth will suffer, hurting even more people.

As the monsoon rains continue to fall, the UN this week made fresh appeals for more money from international donors to respond to this crisis.

Tearfund is playing its part. The support of individuals and local churches across the UK and Ireland is enabling us to bring practical help and Christlike compassion to some of the most vulnerable survivors.

Backed by generous giving to our Pakistan appeal, Tearfund is supporting our partner SSEWA-Pak as it gets emergency supplies to those who need it.

Food and other basic items, such as stoves, pots and plastic sheets for shelter, have been given to 8,000 people in the northern province of
Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa and a similar number are being assisted in the same way in Sindh, further south.

Please use the following points to guide your prayers:

• Pray that more flood survivors will be reached and helped by aid agencies and the Pakistani authorities.

• Give thanks for the support that has enabled Tearfund to bring lifesustaining aid and hope to thousands of people.

• There are growing fears for the health of children. Unicef warns 3.5 million are at risk of disease. Please pray against epidemics.

• Pray for efforts to help the millions of Pakistanis who have been made homeless and that they will have access to shelter soon.

BOLTON HOSPICE
Bolton Hospice is a modern, purpose-built unit with 14 beds plus extensive day care, outpatient and complementary therapy facilities.

What they do:

The team at Bolton Hospice is dedicated to improving the quality of life for patients and the people close to them who face the problems associated with life-threatening disease.

Specialist 'Palliative Care' addresses all patient needs - not just the physical, such as the relief of pain and other symptoms, but also psychological and spiritual care. Our aim is to enhance quality of life and also positively influence the course of illness.

We provide this care at the Hospice and also in the homes of patients who are in the final stages of life.

How they do it:

The Hospice team comprises medical staff, nurses, administrative and clerical staff, catering and housekeeping staff, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, fund-raising staff, complementary therapists and chaplaincy.

The work of all these people - and the Hospice's superbly equipped premises - are paid for almost entirely by the generosity of people in Bolton through their donations large and small, and by the giving of their time as volunteers.

TRANSFORMERS!

WHO? WHAT? WHERE?

What are you doing this summer?

Are you going away anywhere? Doing anything special?

Every year Tearfund sends Transform teams to roll up their sleeves and work alongside poor communities around the world. Groups of 10 to12 people visit a Tearfund partner for several weeks.

Transform teams do all kinds of jobs and activities, from teaching children to painting buildings. They learn together about what it's like to live and be a Christian in a different country. And they see how poverty affects the people who live there.

This summer, one Transform team will visit Rwanda. What kinds of things will they get up to?
