What Is a Policy Statement?
There are as many policy statements as there are organisations to make them. Policy statements serve to clarify intent, describe how a policy is administered and define the particulars of a policy. They serve to protect an organisation from misunderstandings that might lead to unauthorised behavior or lawsuits.
General Statement of Intent
The first part of a policy statement should give an overview of the policy and why it was created. There can be many different policy statements in one organisation. For example:
In human resources, one policy statement might cover the company attitude toward appropriate dress because the company wants to project a certain image to its customers.
Another HR policy statement might deal with sick leave and when it is appropriate for an employee to call in sick.
In the same company, a marketing department policy statement might describe company policy on the ordering of goods and services.
